METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) — Officials have identified the man who detectives say was fatally shot after he pointed a gun at Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies over the weekend.

The Jefferson Coroner says 50-year-old Joseph Riviere III was shot and killed in Metairie just after midnight on Saturday morning.

According to JPSO, deputies were looking for a man at a home in the 1700 block of Harvard Avenue wanted for questioning regarding an incident that took place earlier that night. Details regarding the incident were not disclosed.

At some point after the JPSO arrived, officials say Riviere arrived at the home and exited a vehicle, then pointed a gun at deputies. At least one of the deputies fired a shot at the man, ultimately killing him.

At least one deputy fired at the man hitting him. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

The shooting remains under investigation.
