Body found in Dumpster Walmsley Blvd. @ S. Lopez

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – July has been the deadliest month this year. Twenty-three people were murder last month in New Orleans nearly doubling the number reported in June. Over the weekend five people were killed, four in shootings bringing the total number of deaths for 2016 to 89.

On Monday morning, firefighters were called to a fire near Walmsley Avenue and South Lopez Street in Broadmoor about 4 a.m. After extinguishing flames to a big commercial dumpster, the NOPD says firefighters found a man’s body inside. Detectives are classifying the case as a homicide.

“I was not surprised, not shocked because we do have crime in the neighborhood. You have to be aware of things happening like this, you’ve lived here all these years, and this is New Orleans. This is a large city and things like this happen in large cities,” said Lois Magee, who lives in the neighborhood.

On Sunday, police say they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds lying on Keats Street near Curran Boulevard about 1 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating a double homicide in the 7th Ward also on Sunday morning. The victims were two brothers of Lil Wayne’s ex-wife, Toya Wright. Police say the men were found inside a car parked at Pauger and North Miro streets.

Wright took to social media to express her grief, saying “I will never understand this.”

On Saturday morning about 6:30 a.m. a man was found shot to death at a home on Myrtle Street near Franklin Avenue.
