NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officers with the New Orleans Police Department have arrested a man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened in the St. Claude area.

On Sunday, May 12, the NOPD reported officers responded to intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and Clouet Street around 10:48 p.m., where they found a bicyclist who had been hit by a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

NOPD officials said an initial investigation showed a SUV was driving south on Clouet Street when they allegedly hit the bicyclist and drove away from the scene.

On Tuesday, May 14, NOPD detectives said 21-year-old Christian Rand was arrested in connection with the investigation.

NOPD officials said the SUV was found on Monday, and on Tuesday, Rand and his attorney appeared for questioning.

According to the NOPD, “Rand admitted to being the driver of the impacting vehicle.”

Rand faces a charge of hit-and-run driving with serious bodily injury or death.
