NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A man accused of killing a Tulane University police officer in 2021 was found guilty on all charges on Thursday, April 4.

On day two of the trial, John Shallerhorn was found guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery for killing Martinus Mitchum after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

According to officers with the New Orleans Police Department, Mitchum was shot while working security detail at a George Washington Carver High School basketball game.

Shallerhorn tried to enter the gym without wearing a mask but was denied entry.

NOPD officers said Shallerhorn got into an argument with a school staffer. Mitchum attempted to de-escalate the situation, and that’s when officers said Shallerhorn pulled out a gun and shot Mitchum twice.

Mitchum was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his wounds.

NOPD officers said Shallerhorn was arrested following the incident.

His sentencing is set for May 15.
