NOPD investigates Pines Village homicide, 7th Ward shooting hours apart

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating two separate incidents on Monday morning, June 17, that left a man dead and a victim shot.

According to NOPD officers, at 4:13 a.m. they were called to a scene in the Pines Village neighborhood in the 4600 block of Downman Road.

Responding officers said when they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

An investigation revealed that the victim was closing the business for the day when the suspect approached and began a fight. The altercation resulted in the suspect shooting the victim and then fleeing in an unknown direction.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The NOPD is in the process of gathering evidence and information to determine a possible suspect and motive.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 42-year-old Vernon Davis on Wednesday, June 19.

The homicide comes after another person was wounded in a shooting in the 7th Ward around 2:23 a.m. Monday. Officers said the victim arrived at a hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.

The shooting remains under investigation.
