New Orleans Police Department reports decrease in violent crime for early 2024

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department reports a decrease in violent crime and property crime for early 2024 compared to early 2023.

On Tuesday, March 5, the NOPD released statistics from Jan. 1, 2024, to March 3, 2024, noting the data was gathered from department statistics.

“While it is early in the year, the continued reduction in violent crime statistics reflects the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the New Orleans Police Department,” said NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.

According to NOPD data, there has been a 34% decrease in violent crime in early 2024 compared to early 2023.

Murders

The data states from Jan. 1, 2024, through March 4, 2024, the NOPD has investigated 29 murders, a 34% decrease from 44 reported murders during the same time in 2023.

According to the data, 11 murders were reported for February 2024, a 42% decrease compared to February 2023.

Homicides

The NOPD also reported statistics from its homicide unit. Of 21 homicides reported for 2024 through March 4, 20 have been classified as murders, 10 have been cleared by arrests and four have been cleared by warrants.

NOPD officials said the NOPD Homicide Unit has clearance and solve rates of 72%.

According to the NOPD, “five cold case homicides have been cleared by arrest so far in 2024, with two cleared by warrant.”

Weapon Arrests and Non-Fatal Shootings

Through March 4, the NOPD reports officers have made 158 illegal possession of a firearm arrests.

NOPD officials said the department has investigated 44 non-fatal shootings through March 4, 2024, 39% less than 72 non-fatal shootings reported within the same time period in 2023.

Of the 44 non-fatal shootings reported in 2024 through March 4, 27 were in February. According to the NOPD, this is an 18% decrease from February 2023.

Armed Robberies

NOPD data shows 52 armed robberies have been reported through March 4, 2024, a 56% decrease compared to 2023.

In February 2024, the NOPD reported 14 armed robberies, 71% less than the number of armed robberies reported in February 2023.

Carjacking

The NOPD reported 27 carjackings through March 4, a 50% decrease compared to the same time in 2023.

According to the data, the number of carjackings in February 2024 is 52% lower than the number of carjackings reported in February 2023, with 11 in 2024.

Property Crime

The NOPD also reported a 26% decrease in property crime for early 2024.

Compared to statistics for early 2023, the NOPD reported a 42% decrease in auto thefts and a 41% decrease in vehicle burglaries.
