NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Two wanted suspects, who the New Orleans Police Department say managed to escape following a deadly double shooting on Ulloa and South Pierce streets, are in police custody.
The Mid-City shooting happened on July 27 around 12 p.m. and left a 30-year-old woman dead and a 41-year-old man wounded.
Through video surveillance, NOPD officers were able to identify Desmond Henry, 30, and Jessie Carter, 32, as suspects in the investigation.
“Those perpetrators, through surveillance cameras, were seen driving a white Yukon SUV. The special operations division tracked this vehicle to this location at the 6100 block of painters,” New Orleans Police Department Captain Hans Ganthier said.
Officers say that once they located the suspects, they began pursuing them on foot.
At a point during the pursuit, an officer opened fire, hitting Henry in the leg.
Eventually, both of them were arrested.
“We did recover two weapons. One of them was from the individual who was shot and the other was a rifle in the vehicle,” said Ganthier.
Also at the scene was Councilman Eugene Green, since it happened in his district.
“I do want to speak to some of the people involved with criminal activities. It results in so many times you’re being denied the right to be amongst other citizens and amongst other people. Stop the crimes. Try to do something else,” said Green.
No officers were shot, but one of them injured his knee and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Henry is facing charges of resisting arrest, felon in possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of stolen things. Carter is facing charges of resisting arrest, illegal possession of stolen things and a hold for probation violation.
The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by the NOPD Public Integrity Bureau’s Force Investigation Team.
The Public Integrity Bureau’s Deputy Chief will make a recommendation to the Superintendent of Police on behalf of the city if the police body cam footage should be released to the public.
