NOPD arrest accused man involved in St.Bernard area homicide

The NOPD’s Violent Offender Warrant Squad and the U.S. Marshals today (August 5, 2021) arrested Mekaill Harris (pictured, black male, DOB: 08-31-1988) in the investigation of a homicide on June 28, 2021 in the 4100 block of Jumonville Street.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On June 28, the NOPD began investigating a homicide in the 4100 block of Jumonville Street located in the heart of the St. Bernard Area.

Initial reports from the NOPD before 5 p.m. showed a man was fatally wounded from gunshot wounds upon arrival. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

A follow-up report stated a second male victim was transported to the hospital by EMS after sustaining a gunshot wound during the incident as well.

The victim who died was identified as 24-year-old Tommy Butler.

Through investigation, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives developed and positively identified 32-year-old Mekaill Harris as the perpetrator in this incident.

He was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center and charged with Second Degree Murder and obstruction of justice.
