ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A traffic stop in St. Tammany Parish led to the arrest of an 18-year-old who was wanted in connection to a shooting that happened earlier this year during a Bogalusa High School basketball game.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that around 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, a criminal patrol deputy pulled over Chrysler 300 near the corner of Highway 21 and Highway 59 in Covington for violating various traffic laws.

Deputies said during the stop, Jimmerious Smith was found in the back seat. He was wanted in connection to the shooting, which left a 14-year-old student dead and 12-year-old student wounded.

According to the sheriff’s office, he was found in possession of a gun that may have been used in the shooting.

Smith was wanted on a full extradition warrant by the Bogalusa Police Department on charges of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, aggravated criminal damage and possession of a firearm in a firearm-free zone.

Additionally, during the stop, Smith allegedly refused to tell the deputy his name.

He was arrested on a charge of failure to identify and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center.
