WASHINGTON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A sergeant with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office was seriously injured after being hit head-on by an impaired driver on Thursday, May 23.

The sheriff’s office reported Sergeant John O’Hern was on-duty and responding to a call off Highway 25, south of Franklin, when he was hit.

As a result of the crash, he’s suffering from a shattered pelvis, a dislocated femur and various other injuries.

When he was sworn in, O’Hern made it a top priority to arrest drunk drivers, according to the WPSO.

“We know the road to recovery will be long and challenging for Sergeant O’Hern, but we stand by him and support him fully. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the department posted to Facebook.

The WPSO didn’t report if the driver was arrested.
