Take it off! Volunteer models bedazzle themselves for a David Bowie inspired Mardi Gras showcase!

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – It’s time to take it off!

“It’s nice to see everybody comfortable in their own skin,” says local artist/model Shannon Rockefeller.

No, it’s not what you think. These beauties aren’t getting paid, they’re volunteers in a groundbreaking David Bowie inspired Mardi Gras showcase and we’ve got a behind the scenes sneak peek!

This “Bowie Gras” photo shoot features dozens of models, men and women who are busy bedazzling themselves from head to toe, taking hours for this meticulous application process to dry.

“We so rarely get to use our bodies as part of the canvas,” says model Sydney Kleinberg.

Co-collaborators Brittany Schall and Josh Hailey are the creative talent behind the project, incorporating all body types. It’s a celebration of the human form and a sense of community.

“It is so wonderful to engage in something where you get to be with other people, collaborate with other people and the colors and the textures and to have instant gratification of photography and have that fine art spin to it,” says local artist Brittany Schall.

Twenty pounds of glitter to be exact.

It’s an experience unlike any other.

“Every time we do this I feel like someone’s wither had a surgery or some kind of body image issue that they’re going through and they’re doing this as a test to prove to themselves they can do this, they have the guts to do it,” says local artist Josh Hailey.

The David Bowie/Mardi Gras showcase will be on display in the Bywater Art Lofts Gallery on Saturday, February 13 from 6-10 p.m.
