Flood dogs’ recoveries could take months says animal welfare group

COVINGTON, LA (WGNO) — Workers with the St. Tammany Humane Society are now caring for more than 150 dogs that were rescued during the recent flooding. Almost all of the animals came from other shelters in the areas affected by the flooding and need forever homes.  They were down on their luck already.  Their arrival at the STHS was unexpected but not unwelcome. Now the work is underway to get the dogs ready for adoption.  On Sunday, more than 40 were spayed or neutered with the groups “Spay Day”.  Along with the shelter’s workers, the event included a long list of veterinarians and other volunteers who donated their time to the cause.  Another, similar event is planned for  September 11. After being spayed or neutered, the dogs that are heart worm positive will be treated for that condition.  Those that test negative will soon be available for adoption.
