NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – More people drive than fly to get to their Thanksgiving feasts, but it’s still a busy time at the airport. Here are a few ways to make your journey smoother, going to and from Louis Armstrong International Airport.

Tip No. 1: DO GET A RIDE. Parking can be a nightmare during peak holiday travel periods. Ask friends or neighbors for help ahead of time, and be sure to make arrangements for your return as well. The airport parking lots will likely be full to capacity by Thanksgiving Day, and catching a shuttle from a distant lot could cost you precious time.

Speaking of time, Tip No. 2: DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. Get to the airport at least two hours ahead of your flight. If you end up with extra time on your hands you can spend time in the gift shops, catch up on reading or have yourself an early (or late) Thanksgiving feast at one of the famous local eateries located inside the airport.

When it comes to identification, some travelers are wondering when they need to beef up their ID. Airport spokesperson Michelle Wilcut says no worries, Louisiana residents have been given some extra time.

“There has been a waiver issued to the state of Louisiana for compliance with the Real ID act, so it will be October of 2016 when the additional ID requirements come into play, so right now you are fine traveling with your state issued ID or driver’s license,” says Wilcut.

Happy travelers say the key to success is taking any stress in stride.

One final bit of advice for anyone picking up someone at the airport during the holiday season: Tip No. 3: DO PLAN AHEAD. Tell your arriving friends and family members to get their checked bags, then head back upstairs to the “departures” level. This way, you will avoid the congestion that always happen outside of baggage claim.

Less time dealing with traffic and lines means more time with your loved ones.
