HARVEY, La. (WGNO) – The street where Jefferson Parish Detective David Michel Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty has been named in his honor.
The Jefferson Parish Council voted today – with the support of Michel’s family – to rename Ascot Road in Harvey to Det. David Michel Jr. Drive. The sign was installed this afternoon, Councilman Chris Roberts said on his Facebook page.
Michel, 50, a 10-year JPSO veteran, was shot and killed about mid-day June 22 while trying to conduct a pedestrian stop on Manhattan Boulevard at Ascot Road.
Michel stopped 19-year-old Jerman Neveaux because he appeared to be following someone. While Michel was searching Neveaux, Neveaux pulled a gun from his waist and shot Michel in the back. As Michel fell to the ground, Neveaux shot him two more times in the back at point blank range.
Neveaux is being held in the St. Charles Parish Jail on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, battery of a police officer and resisting arrest.
