BRPD officers involved in Alton Sterling shooting have prior use-of-force complaints

BATON ROUGE (WGNO) – The two Baton Rouge police officers on administrative leave after shooting and killing Alton Sterling have been the subjects of a combined five internal affairs investigations, including three for use of force, according to KATC-TV3 in Lafayette.

The Lafayette station reports that Howie Lake II, who’s been with BRPD for three years, was involved in a shootout with a suspect in December 2014. Lake and the five other officers involved were cleared of any wrongdoing.

The second internal investigation for Lake happened in April 2014, when Lake fell on top of a juvenile while trying to handcuff him to a car. He was cleared in that case, too.

Blane Salamoni, a four-year veteran of BRPD, was investigated in August 2015 after he punched a suspect several times. The suspect required stitches for the head injury, according to documents obtained by KATC. Salamoni said the suspect tried to take his Taser.
