NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Thursday afternoon, the “Safe Cars Save Lives” campaign will roll into town.

From 2 – 3:30 in the afternoon, safety experts will help drivers check to see if their car’s air bags are on the federal recall list, as well as get information on everything from tire inflation and safety seats to heatstroke prevention.

Drivers can stop by the OMV at 100 Veterans Blvd. to take advantage of the safety service.

A main focus of the tour’s stop in New Orleans will be related to Takata air bags.  Tens of millions of the air bags are being recalled in the United States.  A defect may cause the bags’ inflators to explode and cause serious injury or even death.  According to experts, the problem could be more common in older cars or in hot, humid environments.

The recall includes foreign and American-made cars.

The event is organized by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
