Clean up continues for five train cars that fell off Huey P. Long Bridge

ELMWOOD, La. (WGNO) – Trains chugged along the Huey P. Long bridge in Elmwood under a cloudy sky Tuesday morning. Seventy feet below construction crews were trying to clean up what was left of five Union Pacific train cars that tumbled off the very same bridge just a day earlier.

WGNO reporter Jabari Thomas captured the amazing video of the cars falling off the bridge.

Emergency crews spent 16 hours on Monday trying to get a handle on the situation. After an initial assessment, they determined no one was injured and nothing was leaking from the mangled cars.

On Tuesday, Union Pacific had removed three cars still stuck on the track and one train frame which was dangling above the ground.

Union Pacific told WGNO they spoke with the conductor and engineer operating the 65 car train. They said the train crew was trying to get off the bridge and stop somewhere safe, but the storm moved in too fast.

A camera was installed on the front car of the train that fell. Officials are not releasing that video at this time. Entergy has also restored power due to this problem.
