NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – He was the first black person to graduate with a law degree from Louisiana State University, the first to be a representative and the first African American to be Mayor.
On Monday, Ernest “Dutch” Morial was honored as his remains were transferred from St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 to St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.
Attendants were happy to talk about Mr. Morial’s determination, ambition and kind-heartedness but more than this many wanted to emphasize the need for a continuation of his legacy.
Jackie Harris, who founded the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp, told us she hopes young people are educated on the histories of black people who went before them and will understand the need to move that work forward.
