EXCLUSIVE: Wobbling NOPD Officer Speaks

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A New Orleans Police Detective has become internet famous; not from his work on the force, but because of his dance moves.

WGNO News Reporter Darian Trotter spoke exclusively to Winston Harbin about his dance videos that have gone viral. (SEE VIRAL VIDEO HERE)

We’ve seen the official Wobble video and it’s contagious flash mob performances by average Joes and  numerous wedding parties.

Now see it performed by a uniformed police officer.

“Yes, that would be me (laugh),” Harbin said proudly.

Winston Harbin is the New Orleans Police Detective whose dance moves during Mardi Gras have gone viral.

Trotter asked, “What do you think about all of this? It’s a bit breathtaking, it’s humbling.”

The 17-year veteran officer was working a 14-hour shift During Lundi Gras, along the Canal Street parade route, when he joined in on an impromptu wobble.

In just a few hours, the cell phone video got thousands of hits on YouTube.

Trotter asked, “You’re out there, you’re working, what happened, you heard the music? Absolutely, it just sometimes it possesses you sometimes, you just wobble on demand,” Harbin replied.

It’s not Mardi Gras in New Orleans without parades and music.

It was along the Zulu parade route of Jackson Avenue that Harbin again couldn’t help but join in during the line dance of the day; the Cupid Shuffle.

The 9th ward native says he grew up during the Soul Train error.

So when his daughters taught him to wobble and shuffle, it came easy.

“Its fun, it’s rewarding in that sense to know that the simple act such as the dance, a little music, can unite a group of people, it’s great.”

The city’s top cop, Ronal Serpas, doesn’t have a problem with Harbin’s smooth moves, but he does have some constructive criticism.

“The Superintendent has instructed me to create or involve myself with a new dance because the wobble is now old.”

Big Freedia introduced twerking to the world and set a record.

Grandmothers are doing it, and Miley Cyrus made headlines when she did it at the VMA’s.

Trotter asked, “Alright, you know everybody’s twerking. Will we see twerking?” “That was suggested, but I’m not so sure. I might have to work on that (laugh),” Harbin jokingly replied.

Harbin works cold-cases in the NOPD Homicide Division when he’s not wobbling and shuffling.
