Fines for not wearing a seat belt go up today

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Do you always wear a seat belt when behind the wheel? Beginning today (August 1) failing to wear a seat belt in Louisiana could cost you double.

Drivers and their passengers can expect to pay $50 for the first time they’re caught without a seat belt, repeat offenders will play $75 for each time they fail to click it.

Originally the fine was $25 for first-time offenders.

Earlier this year, Louisiana launched the “Buckle Up In Your Truck” campaign to urge pickup truck drivers to wear a seat belt. The JPSO warned that not only are pickup truck drivers and passengers less likely to wear a seat belt but that trucks are twice as likely to rollover in fatal crashes.

More than 400 other state laws when in effect August 1. See more here.
