French Quarter road closures begin Monday

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)— On Friday, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works announced that Hard Rock Construction will pour the concrete roadway in the 700 block of Conti Street beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, October 4, weather permitting.

This work is part of a $2.4 million full-depth reconstruction project in the 700 block of Conti Street between Bourbon and Royal streets.

The 700 block of Conti Street has been closed since crews began replacing the underground utilities in March. In preparation for pouring the first half of the roadway, Hard Rock Construction will close the 300 and 400 blocks of Bourbon Street, as well as the 800 block of Conti Street to vehicular traffic in order to position a concrete truck at the intersection of Bourbon and Conti streets. These closures will be in place from 8 a.m. until noon.

Upon completing the first half of the pour and reopening the 300/400 blocks of Bourbon Street and the 800 block of Conti Street, Hard Rock Construction will close the 300 and 400 blocks of Royal Street to vehicular traffic in order to position a concrete truck at the intersection of Conti and Royal streets.

The 300 and 400 blocks of Royal Street will then remain closed to vehicular traffic for approximately one week to allow crews to complete the utility work and granite curbs in the Royal and Conti street intersection.

Crews have replaced and upsized the existing drain lines and catch basins in the 700 block of Conti Street, replaced the existing water lines, and repaired and or replaced the existing sewer lines. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric have replaced the existing low-pressure gas lines with high-pressure gas lines and replaced and/or repaired the existing underground electrical duct banks. Once the roadway has been poured, followed by an estimated three-day cure time and four days for granite curb installation, the fence will be removed so that pedestrian traffic can move to the roadway while the contractor begins replacing the sidewalks and adding Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps at intersections.

The 600 block of Conti Street between Royal and Chartres Street was originally included as part of this project, however, it has been removed and will be bid out through a separate project at a later time. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric are in the process of completing their utility upgrades in this block.

The 700 block of Conti Street project, which was designed by Mott McDonald, LLC is anticipated to run through early November 2021. Project partners include Entergy Electric, Entergy Gas, Cox Communications, and AT&T.
