(WGNO) — Promising baseball players ages 13-18 got to show their stuff to more than 20 college and professional baseball scouts. The players will be graduating from high school between 2017-2024. The event gives the coaches and scouts an opportunity to get a close look at some of the top young players in the New Orleans area.
The event was organized by the NOLA Baseball Club. Wake Forest baseball head coach, and former UNO coach, Tom Walter headlined the event at the Louisiana Baseball and Softball Academy in Elmwood.
Representatives from the Miami Marlins as well as the University of Southern Mississippi, Tulane, Nichols State, UNO, Loyola, Southern, Northwestern State and other universities and colleges assessed the talent and could even make offers to eligible players on the spot . They could also get to know players who they could begin to follow for future consideration, perhaps inviting them for a campus visit.
In all, 65 players participated.
Coach Walter also spoke with the kids to tell them what he looks for in a player. Walter made it clear that he wants players who are as strong academically as they are competitive on the field.
