HARAHAN, La. (WGNO) – A Harahan grandmother was arrested Sunday for reportedly leaving her 8-year-old grandson on the side of a highway.

According to Harahan Police, officers responded about 4 p.m. Sunday to reports that a woman was driving a vehicle in the 1100 block of Dickory Ave., where she stopped her vehicle, let a child out and then drove away.

A stranger stopped and helped the 8-year-old boy because he was too scared to cross the busy highway.

The stranger took the boy to the Harahan Fire Department.

The child told police he dropped a toy out of the window, and when he got out of the car to get the toy, his grandmother, Evelyn Knight, drove away.

The child was not wearing shoes or a shirt, and the ground was hot, police said.

When questioned by police, Knight said she drove away because the child was taking too long. Asked how she expected him to get home, she said “I don’t know.”

Knight was arrested for child desertion and booked into the Jefferson Parish Jail.
