NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Before we even get started on the first Saturday at the fest, I want to let you know I actually have 10 picks but “LBJ’s Top 5” sounds better!
Also, check out my picks for Day 1.
Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue
First up, you get to check out Twist stage favorites Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue rock the Fais Do Do Stage starting at 12:20 p.m., and you probably won’t catch the end of that show because NOLA guitar whiz Leo Nocentelli also hits at the same time on Congo Square. Get a beer or a lemonade because the day is just starting.
Leo Nocentelli
Jazz at 1 O’Clock
Beginning at 1:20 p.m., a triple of jazz with James Andrews and the Crescent City All Stars get down in the blues tent, followed by Gregg Stafford and his Young Tuxedo Brass Band’s traditional set at 1:35 p.m. in Economy Hall, or enjoy a modern take on jazz with my high school chum, the incredible Victor Goines set at 1:40 p.m. in the WWOZ Jazz Tent.
Glen David Andrews Gospel Set
After sloshing down the softshell crab po-boy and a mango freeze, check out Zydeco whiz Keith Frank & the Solieu Zydeco Band jump start the Fais Do Do Stage at 3:05 p.m. and you don’t want to miss my man Glen David Andrews and the Treme Choir in the Gospel Tent. Bring a towel and your sins!
Cha Wa
Cha Wa featuring Papa Mali bring the culture at 4:15 p.m. at the Jazz and Heritage stage and then pick your passion. Catch the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church Choir wrap up the day at the Gospel Tent with a performance that’s sure to please.
Maxwell
R & B crooner Maxwell has a new single (Lake By The Ocean) and a new album on the way, and you’d better get to Congo Square early. It will be packed for his 5:35 p.m. start.
Pearl Jam
Undoubtedly one of the largest Jazz Fest crowds in history is expected because of the great weather, and two words: Pearl Jam! They close the Acura Stage, starting at 4:30 p.m. and folks will be camped out all day.
