NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — With Fourth of July festivities underway, the Humane Society of Louisiana is sharing tips to make sure you and your pet have a safe and comfortable holiday.

According to the Humane Society, fireworks can scare pets and large animals, causing them to run away or injure themselves.

Humane Society officials said shelters “report picking up many pets during the days after July 4th because many flee their homes.”

To help keep your pet safe, the Humane Society offered the following tips:

  • Have a friend or family member stay home with your pet
  • Keep your pets inside.
  • If your dog or cat is sensitive to fireworks or loud noises, talk to your vet about mild sedatives.
  • Update your pet’s identification in case you become separated.
  • Use a vapor machine or your pet’s favorite toy to help them stay calm and busy.
  • Close and cover windows.
  • Exercise with your pet during the day to help burn extra energy.

Humane Society officials also suggest checking with your local rescues, public shelters and social media if your pet escapes.
