Local connections to the Volleyball AVP Pro Series New Orleans Open happening this weekend

KENNER (WGNO)— The AVP Pro Series New Orleans Open beach volleyball tournament will be played at Coconut Beach in Kenner this weekend.

There are several players competing with local ties to Louisiana like LSU products Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss, who are coming off victories in their last two tournaments. They won the AVP Austin Open earlier this month and won an event in Turkey on the Volleyball World tour in which they beat the reigning Olympic silver medalists for the Championship match.

Another local tie is Metaririe native, Evan Cory who also recently won a match in La Paz, Mexico.

Serve! Set! Spike! These professional beach volleyball players are making their mark on the sand!

“We are ready to go baby,” Chase Frishman, Professional Volleyball Player from California said.

Pro Beach Volleyball’s biggest tournament—The AVP Pro Series New Orleans is back at Coconut Beach in Kenner.

“Sticky heat, beignets, chance to get eaten by gators, a lethal combo,” Frishman jokingly said.

But seriously these players know that the stakes are high.

“Swing high, hard, and hope for the best, and slither one low,” Frishman said.

This year it is a homecoming for two Louisiana natives—both Kristen Nuss and Evan Cory are from Metairie, and they’ll be competing.

“Both Kristen and Evan grew up playing here at Coconut Beach as soon as they could walk, now they can show other players and their counterparts that this is their home,” Robert Bruce, General Manager of Coconut Beach said.

Bruce went on to say, “This is everything for the local community who watched these kids grow up and watch them try to serve overhand for the very first time. Now they are kicking butt on the biggest tour in the country.”

“This is as big as it gets and we are the only dive bar hosting the biggest tournament in the United States,” Bruce said.
