Louisiana’s TOPS program will no longer grow with tuition

BATON ROUGE, La. (WGNO) – Louisiana’s TOPS program will no longer grow with tuition each year. Governor John Bel Edwards signed the TOPS cost containment bill Tuesday, which would lock in the TOPS payment rate at next year’s tuition level.

The TOPS program traditionally covered the full cost of tuition. If tuition grows, and lawmakers don’t agree to raise TOPS payments, then students will have to pay more in the coming school years.

WBRZ reports that supporters were trying to make sure Louisiana could continue to afford TOPS, which is estimated to cost nearly $300 million next year.

Opponents say the bill violates an agreement with Louisiana’s students.
