New list ranks Louisiana as one of the ‘least safe’ states

Memorial Day kicks off what's known as 100 deadliest days for teen drivers. From 2010 to 2014, more than 5,000 people have died in crashes involving teen drivers in those 100 days, AAA said today. A new study (PDF) by the association's Foundation for Traffic Safety showed that nearly 60% of teen crashes involved distracted drivers.

WGNO — A new study ranks Louisiana in the 10 least safe states.

WalletHub analysts compared the 50 states and Washington, D.C. in five categories including community safety, road safety, and safety from natural disasters.

So where did Louisiana rank?

We came in at #45 out of 51. Mississippi is the least safe state according to the list.

In those ranking categories, Louisiana only made the worst five under “Most fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel.”

We ranked number 3 for the “most law-enforcement employees per capita” section.

Only one Gulf Coast state made the list for “highest estimated property losses from climate disasters.” That was Alabama.
