NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On Thursday morning, the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire on Esplanade Avenue.

According to NOFD, firefighters arrived on the scene of 1833 Esplanade Avenue, a large two-story wood-framed dwelling with thick black smoke from the second floor, at 8:27 a.m.

Firefighters rescued 12 cats and two occupants who were inside the home at the time of the fire.

According to firefighters, two adult males were located and rescued from a rear second-floor balcony

According to NOFD, one of the victims was taken to a local hospital to be treated, while the second victim was treated on the scene.

According to NOFD, firefighters attempted to revive the cats, but all 12 died on the scene.

It took 16 NOFD units to bring the fire under control.
