NEW ORLEANS – Shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday, the New Orleans Police Department began investigating a car crash near the Superdome.

Initial reports show a female was killed in the crash, which occurred in the 1500 block of Poydras.

Through further investigation, officers learned that the victim was traveling eastbound on Pontchartrain Expressway, toward the Claiborne exit on I-10 East.

For unknown reasons the victim lost control of the vehicle and struck the right guardrail, which caused the vehicle to be ejected off the interstate into a nearby parking lot.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release the official cause of death and the victim’s name upon completion of an autopsy and notification of family.
