NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Nine aggravated rapes were reported in New Orleans between November 4 and November 11, adding to this year’s numbers, which have already surpassed 2015’s total.
According to numbers released by the NOPD, 417 rapes had been reported through the end of the third quarter 2016, above 2015’s year end total of 409.
And while 2016 has already eclipsed 2015 for number of rapes reported, 2015’s total was almost 70 percent above the year-end total for 2014 of just 244.
Last week’s rash of rapes will only increase this year’s already high numbers.
In four of last week’s reported rapes, the victim was a juvenile female. One rape victim was a juvenile male. One of the underage female victims was attacked by three men.
Five of the victims reported that they knew their attacker, according to daily reports by the New Orleans Police Department.
The spat of aggravated rapes began on Friday, November 4, when a young girl reported that she was assaulted in the 4800 block of Rosalia Drive in New Orleans East. Another aggravated rape occurred on Saturday, November 5, in the 3300 block of Oliver White Avenue in the Desire neighborhood.
An underage girl was assaulted in the 5500 block of Wilton Drive in Gentilly on November 6, and then three aggravated rapes were reported on Wednesday, November 9.
The first was reported at 7:41 a.m. in the 2200 block of North Galvez. Shortly before 3 p.m., a juvenile female reported that she was raped by three men in the 6000 block of Perlita Street in Gentilly.
The third aggravated rape of the day was reported just before 7 p.m. by a 14-year-old girl, who told police she had been attacked by a 16-year-old boy. In the early morning hours of November 10, a 26-year-old woman reported that she had been raped in the 300 block of Bourbon Street.
A juvenile male reported an aggravated rape in the 5100 block of Bundy Road around 4 p.m. on November 10, and a 22-year-old woman reported that she had been raped on the corner of Clio and South Rampart on November 11.
According to the NOPD, 118 rapes were reported between July 1 and September 30 of this year.
