NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Good news for parade goers along Napoleon Avenue.
Construction on Phase 3 of the flood protection project will be finished in time for Mardi Gras.
That means parade-goers will be able to stand on the neutral ground along Napoleon Avenue from Constance Street to Carondelet Street.
“The underground box culvert is 100% complete and roadway restoration, curb work, etc. is nearing completion,” project managers said on the SELA Uptown Facebook page.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is installing a massive underground canal on Napoleon Avenue to ease flooding during heavy rain events.
Construction on Louisiana Avenue began years ago. It has caused traffic headaches in the area ever since construction began and even prompted at least one business to close because of the traffic delays and detours.
Jamba Juice at the corner of Louisiana and Napoleon avenues closed in September. A sign on the door said “due to the recent construction disruptions we are unable to provide our customers with the level of service and quality of product you have come to expect from us.”
The Army Corps of Engineers said when construction started that the project won’t be finished until spring of 2018.
