NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It was a unique blend of attendees you’d only see in New Orleans.

Fans, musicians, and protesters gathered Friday night to celebrate the life of New Orleans Saint Will Smith while pushing for an end to gun violence.

The group “Stop the Violence” held a memorial second line for Smith, starting at the Half Moon Bar and Grill, parading the short distance to where he was gunned down at Sophie Wright Place and Felicity, then continuing on to the Ohh Poo Pah Doo Bar in the Treme.

Some second-liners played music, others danced with parasols, a vendor sold beer out of a rolling cooler, fans laid flowers at Smith’s memorial and dozens held signs protesting New Orleans’ sky-high murder rate.

When the group arrived at the scene of the shooting, they stopped the music and paused to pray.

Meanwhile, the Saints organization held a public visitation for Smith Friday afternoon.  He was laid to rest after a private service at the Saenger Theater on Saturday.
