NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Afternoon classes at several area campuses are cancelled due to ongoing forecasts of potentially severe weather. Here is a list of the latest university and school closures.
UNIVERSITIES/COLLEGES:
Delgado – Classes at all Delgado Community College locations are cancelled until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27, due to severe weather. Employees will remain at work on their regular schedules until further notice.
SUNO – Afternoon classes at Southern University at New Orleans are cancelled due to ongoing forecasts of potentially severe weather. Non-essential employees may depart the campus for the remainder of the day. University officials will continue monitoring the weather to make a determination regarding the status of evening classes by 3 p.m. this afternoon. An official update will be disseminated by that time.
UNO – The University of New Orleans will hold evening classes (classes scheduled at 4:30 p.m. and later) tonight. The University will also resume normal operations tomorrow morning.
SCHOOL SYSTEMS:
St. John Public Schools – The St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District is working with parish emergency officials to monitor weather conditions. Power is currently out at the St. John Child Development Center, West St. John High School, West St. John Elementary and Garyville-Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet School. However, due to safety concerns we will not be releasing students until conditions improve. Please check www.stjohn.k12.la.us and our Facebook page for updates. Parents will also be notified via our automated telephone system when a decision is made about possible early or late dismissal.
SCHOOLS:
Kenner Discovery Charter School – Kenner Discovery Charter School CEO Patty Glaser has called for the immediate suspension of classes at the school for the day due to inclement weather and power outages. Glaser is urging all parents, family and friends who pick up students to do so by using the school’s “horseshoe” entrance. Also buses have been called to the campus to take home those students who rely on the public transportation. New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School – 5625 Loyola Ave. has closed early today due to a power outage caused by the severe weather in our area. All parents have been contacted and transportation for students has been provided as normal. Parents are asked to contact the school for more information.
KIPP New Orleans Schools – Due to severe weather, the following KIPP schools have early dismissal on Monday, April 27th
• KIPP Central City Primary – 1:30 PM dismissal
• KIPP Central City Academy – 1:45 PM dismissal
• KIPP McDonogh 15 Middle – 2:15 PM dismissal
• KIPP McDonogh 15 Primary – 2:45 PM dismissal
All other KIPP schools in New Orleans will dismiss at their normally scheduled time.
