NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans police released surveillance footage that they say shows a man stealing luggage from a car in the French Quarter.

The footage was recorded at about 3:00 in the morning on July 20 in the 200 block of Chartres Street.

The video shows the man walk up to the car, open the door and then sit in the front passenger seat.  Then he’s seen walking to the back of the car, opening the hatch, then walking away with at least three pieces of luggage.

There’s no indication whether the car was unlocked or if the burglar used some sort of device to gain access.

Along with the video, police released the following list of precautions to help prevent car burglaries.

1. Lock the doors

2. Close windows and sunroofs

3. Don’t leave valuables such as laptops, cell phones, wallets, purses or GPS devices in plain view

4. Put away the garage door opener and any items with personal information

5. Move valuables to the trunk before reaching your destination

6. Don’t leave keys in the vehicle
