NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The wife of Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson, Gayle Benson, spend Wednesday afternoon testifying in her husband’s competency trial.
The trial is closed to the public and reporters, so there’s no way to know what Mrs. Benson said.
After five days of testimony last week, Wednesday was the first day for the trial this week. Afterwards, Mr. and Mrs. Benson spoke with reporters.
“My baby’s tough,” Mrs. Benson told reporters while leaving the courthouse.
Benson followed with, “See y’all next week,” although the trial is set to resume Thursday afternoon and continue on Friday of this week.
Benson’s daughter, Renee, and her children, Rita and Ryan LeBlanc, are trying to convince a judge that the 87-year-old billionaire is no longer capable of running his business empire.
In court Wednesday afternoon, it may have been the first time the Bensons and LeBlancs had been in the same room since the family battle began earlier this year.
“It’s not a street fight,” said the LeBlanc’s attorney Randy Smith describing the afternoon’s testimony and tone in court. “It’s a legal proceeding, well administered.”
