NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Much like driving on Interstate-10, you can now fly a plane with no license required (kidding). But the skies are safe to get your bearings with a personal 50-minute flying lesson.
No prior experience is needed for this excursion, which includes a 20-minute on-ground lesson and 30 minutes of flying time in the company of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified instructor.
You’ll help guide the small plane through take-off and landing. Once airborne you’ll be able to maneuver over New Orleans’ famous sights like the French Quarter, the Mississippi River and the sleepy Louisiana bayous.
This lesson costs $220 and is so fun it might inspire you to want to earn your wings.
“I treat the plane like I treat a toddler,” said David Goodhue, a veteran flight instructor at the academy. “You can’t control a toddler; you can just steer them in the right direction. The plane flies itself; you just have to coax it into doing what you want.”
The lessons take off and land at the famed Lakefront Airport.
The airport is known for grounding celebrities flights who wish to skip all of the traffic from MSY, but is still a public airport.
Movies have been filmed there as well, and the first female pilot, Amelia Earhart, took off on the historic grounds.
