Wheelchair-bound man killed in Central City fire

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A wheelchair-bound man has been killed in a 3-alarm fire at a home in Central City. According to the New Orleans Fire Department, the fire broke out around 2 a.m. in the 2300 block of S. Prieur Street near Jackson Avenue.

Two people were in the home at the time of the fire, one man managed to make it out unharmed.

Friends of the victim have identified him as Robert Rodgers Clay. He is in his 50s and used a wheelchair.

No word on what caused the fire.

Fire officials say there were no smoke alarms in the home.  The NOFD will supply and install smoke alarms to any Orleans Parish resident free of charge upon request.   Click here to request yours.
