EBR Schools: One killed in crash involving school bus, nine others injured

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Wednesday morning school bus crash left one woman dead and nine injured in Baton Rouge.

The Baton Rouge Police Department was called to the scene of a deadly crash involving a school bus on Wednesday morning around 6:30 a.m. The two-vehicle crash happened on Florida and Wooddale boulevards. The Baton Rouge Fire Department was called to the scene to provide assistance.

The person killed in this crash was identified as 50-year-old Cindy Anderson. Police said Anderson crashed into the school bus after bypassing a stop sign on Fernwood Drive. Police continue to investigate the crash, according to an afternoon press release.

According to police, some children were hurt, and the East Baton Rouge Parish School System later confirmed that eight of the ten children who were on the bus sustained minor injuries. Officials added that the driver of the school bus also suffered a minor injury.

Later in the afternoon, EBR Schools issued a statement regarding the tragic collision, saying, in part, “EBRPSS expresses our deepest sympathy to all those impacted by the accident and will remain steadfast in our support for the community.”

An EBRPSS bus carrying 10 students was traveling on Florida Boulevard near Wooddale Blvd was struck by another vehicle at 6:25 a.m. Wednesday. The collision caused the bus to overturn into the roadway. The students were en route to Baton Rouge Magnet High School at the time of the accident.

The bus driver and eight of the students on board sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospitals for medical attention. EMS officials have confirmed that driver of the vehicle involved in the accident died at the scene. We are working with BRPD to gather more information, as the investigation is ongoing. Counselors were at the hospitals with the injured students and their families. I Care specialists will continue to provide support services on site at BRMHS for the remainder of the week.
