NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The verdict is in for the first criminal trial against a former president.
“It’s unprecedented. Nobody has ever seen anything like it, and it could go in a lot of different directions between now and the election,” said political analyst Jeff Crouere.
The question remains, “Will the guilty verdict affect voters going forward?” Crouere believes it can go one or two ways.
“Donald Trump supporters, his real hard-core supporters, are not going to leave him. The question is those people in the middle who always determine who wins or loses,” said Crouere.
Political analyst Dr. Silas Lee believes the result of the trial will affect some voters.
“That’s something we have to see by how much independent voters will either stay or switch from Trump,” said Lee
With five months before the election, Lee says this is only one of the four trials Trump is facing, and it’s still early for voters trying to make up their minds.
“Voters are not going to pay close attention until after Labor Day. People are moving around. You don’t have the intense scrutiny that you will have after Labor Day,” said Lee.
Crouere says the bottom line is Trump isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
“The only way he would be taken off the ballots is if the Republicans decide not to nominate him. He has all the delegates. He would have to withdraw. I don’t see that happening,” said Crouere.
