JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The boil water advisory that was in effect for the east bank of Jefferson Parish has been lifted on Thursday, Jan. 25.

The water issue began on Tuesday after a water main broke at the East Bank Water Treatment Plant on Jefferson Highway. The break led to a road closure and residents being asked to conserve water.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng estimated that the pipe had been installed in the 1940s and collapsed due to age and weather conditions like droughts and freezing temperatures.

The broken line was repaired overnight, but a boil water advisory was issued for the entire East Bank. Many residents had little to no water pressure Wednesday morning as crews worked to re-energize the system.

Residents should flush home plumbing systems by running cold water through all faucets for five minutes and flush out all appliances connected to the water line like refrigerators and dishwaters. Ice from ice makers should be dumped and replaced three times before use.

The Louisiana Department of Health has cleared all East Bank students to return to the classrooms following the boil water advisory.
