JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Officials with The Blood Center are announcing extended hours for blood donations in the wake of recent severe weather across Southeast Louisiana.

TBC officials are citing the recent tornado and flooding as the reason for the “significant depletion” of the blood supply specifically Type O blood, which they said is crucial for emergencies.

The following donor centers will open earlier and extend their hours:

  • Hammond
  • Metairie
  • Mandeville
  • West Bank
  • Slidell

Hours will be extended on Thursday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, April 12 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Medical Director of The Blood Center Dr. Tim Peterson says business closure, lack of electricity and other issues stemming from Wednesday’s weather events reportedly impacted the center’s ability to collect.

“We require a three to four-day supply of blood at all times, especially on days like today where very few donors could give due to treacherous weather conditions across our entire service area. The Easter holidays and recent mass accident events have depleted all reserves. It will take several days and weeks of above-normal community response to replenish what has been used. Of particular urgency is type O blood for emergency use… and platelet donations, which are essential for cancer patients,” said Peterson.

TBC officials say that with cleanup efforts beginning, they anticipate a surge in work-related accidents that will place a demand on blood supply.

They add that while 60% of the community is eligible to donate only 5% can do so. To maintain a robust supply, center officials said they must collect between 200 to 250 pints of blood daily.
