THIBODAUX, La. (WGNO) — Summer is here, which means camps like iCanShine will soon begin.
“Seeing the people sign up has really made us realize this is something our community needs,” said the Co-Founder of Upside Downs Beau Brooks.
Upside Downs is utilizing the iCanSwim and iCanBike programs in Thibodaux, teaching individuals with disabilities important safety skills.
“Not only do we get to service our down syndrome community but the whole community as a whole. We’re excited because the benefit of having both camps is that they teach skills that enhance wellness. They teach a sense of independence and also it provides an increased opportunity for inclusivity,” said Brooks.
Michelle Brooks, co-founder of Upside Downs, understands it can be difficult for families to find programs that accommodate children with disabilities, saying she’s excited about this program coming to the area.
“I’ve been waiting for a long time for this excellent opportunity to bring it to our small town in Thibodaux is just amazing,” said Brooks.
Volunteers are needed to help aid those aged three and older during the five-day camp, an experience that will leave you feeling more connected with each participant.
“If you volunteer for any of our events you know how special and rewarding it is, and it’ll just change your life. You don’t have to be just from Thibodaux. We take any volunteers,” said Brooks.
The camp will take place at Thibodaux Regional Wellness Indoor Pool and begin on June 17. Orientation starts on June 16.
Volunteers must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 15 years old (unless accompanied by an adult)
- Be able to attend the same session(s) for each of the five days of camp
- Provide physical, emotional and motivational support to an assigned swimmer
- Must be able to swim and be comfortable in the water
- Willing to get some exercise in the pool for a great cause
