NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the New Orleans Fire Department have determined the cause of a fire that damaged an abandoned Seventh Ward home.

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, NOFD firefighters reported that at 9:44 p.m. they were called to 1130 Kelerec St. on a report of a fire at the location. Upon arrival, they said the first and second floor of the abandoned wooden framed home was engulfed in flames.

A second alarm was called at 9:52 p.m. to request additional firefighters due to the heavy flames threatening nearby homes.

NOFD officials said despite the windy conditions, they were able to keep the fire contained to the house.

An investigation revealed the cause of the fire was determined to be the actions of vagrants squatting at the location.

Investigators say they spoke to the man and woman who said for the past six months they had been living in the home. They add that they were using a grill as a heating source when they accidentally knocked it over.

NOFD officials are reminding owners of vacant properties to properly secure the buildings as they reportedly pose a risk to neighboring homes and residents.

No firefighters or residents were reported injured during the event.

A total of 15 NOFD units carrying 38 personnel were able to get the fire under control by 10:40 p.m.
