NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans has announced that demolition is underway for a blighted Algiers property featured on its “Dirty Dozen” list.

City officials said crews began demolishing the property, formerly known as the DeGaulle Manor apartments, at 3010 Sandra Drive, noting it has been abandoned for 14 years.

According to the city, “the ownership was found guilty of 15 violations, including deteriorating condition of sidewalks, driveways, exterior walls, porches, doors, windows and roof, as well as trash and debris, rodents and graffiti.”

City officials said residents are advised to avoid the area until demolition is complete.

The property was featured on the city’s Dirty Dozen list of the 12 most blighted properties in New Orleans, released by city officials in November 2023.

Since the list’s introduction, New Orleans leaders noted that demolition is complete at 1031 N. Claiborne Ave., and remediation is complete at 5501 Bundy Road. They said the properties at 2119 Washington Ave. and 10151 Curran Blvd. “have been actively working to address compliance challenges.”

The city also released the status of the seven remaining properties on the list:

  • 1001 Howard Ave., also known as the Plaza Tower, is in discussion with the Office of Economic Development.
  • 6700 Plaza Dr. has a Status Conference to be filed by Friday, May 24.
  • 301 Norman C. Francis Parkway, also known as Lindy Boggs, is working with owners on redevelopment opportunities.
