NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans leaders have announced that two cooling shelters will be open in the city amid an excessive heat warning for the area on Wednesday, June 26.

WGNO meteorologists report that a heat advisory is in effect for the area, and city officials said the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning on Tuesday.

City officials said residents needing a place to cool off can go to the Main Library at 219 Loyola Ave. and the Central City Library at 2020 Jackson Ave. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

They also said all New Orleans Public Library locations will be available for use as a cooling center on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City leaders also provided the following tips to stay safe in the heat:

  • “Stay inside with air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day.”
  • “If you need to go outside, do so early in the morning or late in the evening.”
  • “Wear light, loose clothing.”
  • “Avoid too much sun.”
  • “Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty.”
  • “Check on neighbors, especially children, the elderly and those with health problems especially during power outages.”
  • “Never leave children or pets in a car.”
