NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans still needs millions of dollars to complete its new power complex that is supposed to be ready by summer 2025.
The $29 million is needed to create an automated power complex, meaning they would not always have to rely on an operator, which would reduce human error.
On Friday, June 7, construction on the power station resumed for the projects that have secured funding. That’s the connections from the substation, a new Turbine 7 and frequency changers, which power the stormwater and drinking water pumps.
Additional funding for the project was excluded from the state budget plan. However, New Orleans City Councilman Oliver Thomas believes Gov. Jeff Landry recognizes the critical need.
“My conversation with Landry is that he expects to work this piece out with the mayor and with the Sewerage and Water Board and with our delegation. That was pretty assuring to me,” said Thomas. “Now, how we get this worked out and how soon it gets worked out, what he told me is that he wants to get it done.”
A statement was released on the matter.
Together, with all stakeholders, we are continuing to identify and pursue every potential funding source available to ensure the power complex is brought to fulfillment for the people of New Orleans.

The governor had canceled a Wednesday news conference to discuss funding for the power complex because of a scheduling conflict. A new date has yet to be announced.
