NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a fiery fatal crash in New Orleans East Friday morning.

According to the NOPD, officers were called around 5:30 a.m. to respond to a two-vehicle crash in the 10300 block of Almonaster Avenue.

An investigation revealed a Toyota SUV and a sedan were both traveling east on Almonaster when the sedan clipped the back of the SUV. The driver reportedly lost control, careened into the neutral ground and hit a light pole.

The sedan then caught fire with the driver trapped inside. The New Orleans Fire Department was called to the scene. The flames were put out, but the driver was pronounced dead on the scene.

The SUV’s driver, who was not hurt in the crash, remained on scene.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release the person’s identity after an autopsy is done and the family is notified.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the NOPD Traffic Fatality Unit at (504)-658-6205.
