Groups push for citizen oversight of New Orleans Police Department

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Happening Monday, Feb. 5, two grassroots organizations will hold a public meeting to create a citizen oversight committee for the New Orleans Police Department.

“Community United for Change” and “New Orleans United Front” argue that citizen help is necessary to stop the NOPD from returning to the “unconstitutional policing” prior to the 2013 consent decree.

The organizations have reportedly formulated the necessary structure needed to continue oversight of the NOPD, under the charge of New Orleans City Council.

Group leaders said it’s important to continue the oversight of the NOPD if and when the consent decree ends.

The first meeting will be at the New Orleans Public Library on Read Boulevard from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
