NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry proposed the impeachment of a judge who he believes is “mishandling” the New Orleans Police Department consent decree.
U.S. District Court Judge Susie Morgan is the federal judge who oversees the NOPD consent decree. Last week, during a consent decree hearing, Morgan said she had received several questions about the Louisiana State Police troop in New Orleans.
The judge said she would like clarity on how the LSP will be coordinating with the NOPD, and that the community is curious as well.
During the hearing, Morgan said the LSP is not required to comply with the consent decree.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Landry responded to her comments.
“Maybe it’s time for our U.S. House delegation to take a look at impeaching Judge Susie Morgan for her prolonged mishandling of the NOPD consent decree. She has distorted the law, decimated the ranks of NOPD, and handcuffed the police rather than the criminals. All of this while the citizens of this great city suffer from violent crime. She refuses to acknowledge crime or end the decree,” said Landry in the post.
Landry also called attention to bringing the state police to New Orleans, saying “Now having the State Police in New Orleans gives her concern?”
